It’s the end of the school year, which means prom season is coming to a close. If you’re like most people, you probably have a dress (or two, or three) taking up space in your closet that you’ll never wear again. So what do you do with it? Donate it, of course! Donating your old prom dress is a great way to clear out your closet and help someone in need.
Find a local charity that accepts prom dresses
There are many local charities that would love to have your old prom dress! Some organizations that collect prom dresses are:
-The Princess Project
-Becca’s Closet
-Operation Prom
-Fairy Godmothers of Orange County
Please check out their websites to see if they have a location near you and what their specific requirements are.
Find a national charity that accepts prom dresses
There are many national charities that accept gently used formal wear, but only a few that focus specifically on prom dresses.
-Operation Prom accepts donated dresses and provides them to high school students in need.
-Becca’s Closet gives away free prom dresses to high school girls who cannot afford to purchase their own.
-The Princess Project provides free prom dresses and accessories to high school students in the Bay Area.
Before you donate your dress, be sure to check the guidelines of each organization to ensure that your dress meets their requirements. Most organizations require that donated dresses be new or gently used, and some have specific restrictions on what types of dresses they will accept. For example, some organizations only accept gowns, while others will accept short cocktail-style dresses as well.
Recycle
It’s easy to recycle old prom dresses. You can donate them to a local charity or thrift store. You can also sell them online. You can also upcycle them into new dresses or other items of clothing.
Upcycle into a new piece of clothing
One option for what to do with old prom dresses is to upcycle them into a new piece of clothing. You can use the fabric to make a new dress, skirt, top, or even pants. This is a great way to give new life to an old dress and make something that you’ll actually wear.
To upcycle your prom dress into a new piece of clothing, you’ll need a sewing machine and some basic sewing skills. Start by taking apart the dress and cutting the fabric into the pieces you’ll need for your new garment. Then, sew the pieces together according to the pattern or design you’ve chosen. If you need help, there are plenty of online tutorials and videos that can walk you through the process step-by-step.
Once you’ve finished sewing your new garment, try it on and make any necessary adjustments. Then, show off your upcycled prom dress at your next event!
Use as fabric for a new project
If you’re crafty, you can repurpose your old prom dress into something new. You can use the fabric to make a new dress, skirts, shirts, or even home décor items like throw pillows or curtains. Get creative and see what you can come up with!
Sell
If you’re anything like me, you probably have at least one old prom dress hanging in your closet. What do you do with it? You could keep it and hope to fit into it again someday, or you could give it away to a friend or family member. But why not make some money off of it? In this post, I’ll show you how to sell your old prom dress and make some extra cash.
Have a garage sale
When you’re getting rid of clothes, a garage sale is always an option. You can have one at your house or participate in a community-wide garage sale. This is a great way to make some money while getting rid of unwanted items.
If you’re having a garage sale, be sure to price your items reasonably. You don’t want to price them so high that no one will buy them, but you also don’t want to give them away for too low. A garage sale is a great way to get rid of clothes that you no longer want, but it’s not the only way.
Another option for selling clothes is to consign them. This means that you take your clothes to a consignment shop and they sell them for you. Typically, you will get a percentage of the selling price, and the rest goes to the consignment shop. This is a great option if you have higher-end clothes that you’d like to sell.
You could also try selling your clothes online. There are many websites and apps that allow you to sell clothing and other items. Some popular ones include Poshmark, Mercari, and eBay. You can also try local Facebook groups or Craigslist. Selling clothes online is a great way to get rid of unwanted items and make some extra money.
