What are the Proms?
The Proms, short forPromenade Concerts, are a series of classical music concerts and events held annually in the United Kingdom. The Proms were first held in 1895 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and they are now also staged at venues around the UK, including Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff.
The main aim of the Proms is to make classical music accessible to as many people as possible. Ticket prices are kept deliberately low, and there are a number of free events held during the season. The Proms also offer a unique experience for concert-goers, with standing room only “areas” at the back of the hall known as “the Arena” and “the Gallery”.
Each year, a range of world-famous orchestras and soloists perform at the Proms, making it one of the most popular classical music festivals in the world. The BBC Proms 2022 season will run from 17 July to 11 September.
A Brief History of the Proms
The Proms, or the BBC Promenade Concerts to give them their full name, are a British institution. Founded in 1895 by Henry Wood, they take place every summer at the Royal Albert Hall in London and are now broadcast on television and radio around the world.
Wood was born in 1869 and studied music at the Trinity College of Music. He became a professional musician, playing the violin in various orchestras including the Queen’s Private Band (now known as the Royal Household Band). In 1892 he founded his own orchestra, which gave regular concerts in London’s West End.
In 1895 Wood came up with the idea for a series of concerts at the newly built Royal Albert Hall. These would be open to everyone, not just wealthy concert-goers, and would feature a mix of classical and popular music. The first ever Prom took place on 10 August 1895 and was an immediate success. Over the next few years Wood expanded the programme to include more orchestral works, soloists and choirs.
The Proms quickly became known for their informal atmosphere; audiences were encouraged to sing along with well-known pieces such as ‘Rule Britannia’ and ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, and there was often standing room only at performances. This tradition continues to this day – although you’re now more likely to hear contemporary pop songs being sung than Victorian ballads!
Today, the Proms attract around 250,000 people each year from all over Britain (and beyond). They take place over eight weeks from mid-July to mid-September, with nightly concerts at the Royal Albert Hall plus a number of events taking place across Britain on ‘Proms in the Park’ day (usually held on the last Saturday ofthe season).

The Proms Today
